Taxifolin (Dihydroquercetin, 3,3',4',5,7-Pentahydroxyflavanone) / CAS № 480-18-2 /, one of the most effective natural antioxidants. On the chemical nature it belongs to a class of flavonoid compounds discovered in 1935. It’s activity close to the tocopherol and β-carotene, while demonstrate greater stability.
The main physical and chemical characteristics of Taxifolin: Well soluble in acetone, methanol and ethyl alcohol, propyleneglycol-1,2, ethyl acetate. Insoluble in chloroform, diethyl ether, hydrocarbons. Its solubility in water depends strongly on the temperature. Thus, at 20oC its solubility is about 0.1% mass, with 90oC - 5.20% mass, in a hot water - up to 20 g per 100 ml of water. In appearance high purity Taxifolin a crystalline white powder. |

Taxifolin in pharmaceutics |

Taxifolin by direction of the biological activity is an antioxidant. The mechanism of its action is the inactivation of free radicals and consequently, inhibition of free radical peroxidation, lipids in particular (LPO) at all stages of this process. Taxifolin antioxidant activity is to protect the body against "oxidative stress", i.e. state of the organism, when the peroxidation processes predominate over the processes of synthesis. This scheme is particularly true for the cell wall (membrane). Fundamental ability of Taxifolin to inactivate free radical lipid peroxidation is the base of it biological activity: Taxifolin also exhibits anti-diabetic and antitumor effects, inactivate cytotoxic compounds and supports blood pressure on a physiological level, has a soft hypotensive effect. Taxifolin reduces the content of low-density lipoproteins in blood plasma and liver, show antiviral properties. Developed by us technology allows us to produce on industrial scale high purity "mono-component" Taxifolin on purity corresponding to the modern global requirements. The addition of Taxifolin to the food products has two aims: Being the free radicals scavenger, Taxifolin protects the body from the influence of adverse environmental conditions. Antioxidant properties of Taxifolin can be effectively used to increase the shelf life of the fat reach products.
1. Systematic flow of Taxifolin with food refills the depot of antioxidants in the human body. The reason for insufficient antioxidants in the body is unbalanced diet, insufficient intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, adverse environmental conditions, stress conditions. All this leads to the condition of the organism called "oxidative stress", which is the cause of its many pathological states.
At oral application Taxifolin is absolutely non toxic. The toxicity has not been detected until 12 g/kg of body weight. The daily physiological needs in flavonoids are 200-250 mg per person. 2. Taxifolin has a similar to α-tocopherol and β-carotene high antioxidant activity, but it’s significantly more resistant to oxidation and the action of light, which enhances its use. |

Food products lipids during food technology processing and storage are subject to free-radical oxidation which leads to lower quality and nutritional value of products. To protect them from oxidation process the supplements of antioxidants are used. Currently, preference is given to more radical oxidation inhibitors of natural origin (ascorbate, α-tocopherol, β-carotene and others), and in some countries the ban is imposed on the use of synthetic antioxidants in the food industry. To increase the shelf life of food products Taxifolin is typically used in the quantities of 0,05 - 0,2% of the mass of fat, that gives 2-3 times increase of the shelf life Developed by us highly purified Taxifolin and bioflavonoid complex “Taxifolia ®” containing 98-99% of bioflavonoids and free from impurities open up new possibilities for its use as an antioxidant in food industry. Thus, using Taxifolin as an food antioxidant, we also support the depot of antioxidants in the body. Admission of Taxifolin with food seems the most rational way to maintain the antioxidant status of the organism.
Dairy products It is shown that the antioxidant properties of Taxifolin can be effectively used to increase the shelf life of milk powder, dairy products, dietary products. Adding Taxifolin in products with high fat content gives 2-3 times increase of the shelf life (0,05-0,2% Taxifolin per fat content enough for the manifestation of the effect). The presence of a highly purified Taxifolin in dry milk has no effect on performance of quality (organoleptic properties) of any product made of reconstituted dry milk with the addition of Taxifolin.
Confectionery Research of effectiveness of Taxifolin to increase the shelf life of confectionery products containing up to 37% of fat showed that the addition of Taxifolin in the amount of 0,05 - 0,2% to weight of fat increases the shelf of chocolate and chocolate candies. Natural antioxidants (tocopherols), contained in cocoa beans, rapidly oxidized, do not provide the necessary long-term storage. The addition of Taxifolin to confectionery products in the amount of 0,05 - 0,2%, preserves the acid number of stored materials at an acceptable level 2-2,5 times longer than without additives.
Vegetable fats and oils Addition of Taxifolin is able to eliminate a range of problems in storage of vegetable fats and oils. Shelf life is doubled and there is no need to use vitamin E as an antioxidant.
Meat and fish products Using Taxifolin significantly increases the storage time of meat products and semi-finished products: minced chicken and meat, cutlet weight, dried sausage from chicken and turkey, pork and chicken fat.
Alcohol-containing drinks Most important properties of Taxifolin, determining the effectiveness of its use in the distillery tracks, are antiabstinent and hepatoprotective effect, which reduces the effect of a hangover and protects the liver from damage. |

Taxifolin seems a very promising component for cosmetics, for intensive face and body care as part of creams and balms. As part of shampoos and conditioners it helps to have the hair stay healthy. With its kapillaroprotektive properties Taxifolin facilitates rapid penetration of mineral substances in the composition of cosmetic products in the skin. It was shown that highly purified Taxifolin not only regulates cell metabolism, but is also able to initiate the process of formation of collagen fibrils, which makes it an ideal component of sunscreens and means for wrinkles smoothing. Combination of Taxifolin, having P-vitamin activity of vitamin E and C, leads to a synergy that increases the effects of the components. This reduces their concentration in the preparations and increase the duration of action. In the composition of fat-containing cosmetics Taxifolin works as an antioxidant. Adding Taxifolin in the number of 0,08% -0,2% of the fat mass of the drug, the duration of storage increases by more than 2 times.
